Remarkable Remedies (c. 1880) - Chambers's Journal
A tiny Victorian curiosity, filled with the wonderfully improbable.
In the pages of an 1880 issue of Chambers’s Journal, an anonymous writer gathers a cabinet of extraordinary remedies: strange prescriptions, eccentric practitioners, curious charms and the peculiar lengths to which people once went in pursuit of good health.
Some of these treatments were recommended in earnest. Others are recounted with a distinctly Victorian twinkle in the eye. Between them lies a delightful glimpse of a world in which household wisdom, superstition, fashionable cures and professional medicine jostled for attention.
Expect a little medical history, a little folklore and more than a little astonishment. We shall leave the most extraordinary ingredients for you to discover.
