Birch Polypore Mushroom (Fomitopsis betulina)

Birch Polypore — Fomitopsis betulina

An extraordinary woodland fungus with a history stretching back thousands of years, birch polypore grows upon birch trees and has long attracted the attention of naturalists, herbalists and students of ancient woodland traditions.

Pieces of birch polypore were found among the possessions of Ötzi the Iceman, who lived over 5,000 years ago. Their purpose remains debated, but the discovery offers a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric relationships with fungi.

Historical notes: Birch polypore has been associated with traditional folk preparations, including proposed antiparasitic uses. Such associations do not establish medicinal effectiveness.

Traditional preparations: Dried slices are generally simmered in water to make a decoction, rather than simply steeped like tea. The dried fungus can also be finely powdered, including for encapsulation.

Our botanicals: Carefully gathered, dried and hand-packed in small batches by Hearthwise Herbals.
